WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PROFESSIONAL MASTER’S DEGREE AND THE ACADEMIC MASTER’S DEGREE?
Reply adapted from that in the institutional site of CAPES, “A Professional Master’s degree” is the designation of a Master’s degree that emphasizes studies and techniques directly aimed at the performance of a high level of professional qualification. This emphasis is the only difference as compared to the Academic Master’s degree. They confer identical levels and prerogatives, including the right to teach, and as for all strictosensu postgraduate programs, the diploma has national validity, subject to prior recognition of the course.
The Professional Master’s degree is the response to a socially defined need for professional capacity of a nature different to that provided by the Academic Master’s degree, and does not oppose, from any point of view, the offer and expansion of this course modality, nor does it constitute an alternative to graduate Masters according to simpler or more stringent requirements than those traditionally adopted by postgraduate degree courses.
IS THE DEGREE RECOGNIZED BY CAPES?
Yes, the Master's and Doctor's Degrees in Food Science and Technology at the Rio Pomba Campus are recommended by the Technical Scientific Council of Higher Education (CTC-ES of CAPES).
ARE THE COURSES FREE?
Yes the course is free – you only have to pay an enrollment fee.
IN WHICH PERIOD ARE THE COURSES OFFERED?
The courses are all day on Thursdays and Fridays. In addition the student needs to dedicate some further time to carrying out extra-class activities, including homework related to the individual courses and the elaboration of the dissertation or these.
WILL THE MASTER’S OR DOCTOR'S DEGREES BE OFFERED AT A DISTANCE?
No, the courses require presence although some activities may be developed at a distance.
ARE THERE ANY SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS?
With the exception of some high-priority areas, the professional master’s or doctor's degrees do not presuppose the concession of any scholarships by CAPES.
WHEN DOES THE SELECTION PROCESS TAKE PLACE?
The selection process takes place in the first and second semesters of each year.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REGULAR AND SPECIAL STUDENTS?

By way of a formal request, a special student may be allowed to take up to 25% of the total of credits demanded by the course.
